Dog friendly walks | Near Rotorua

Looking for spots to take the dog? Here are our Top Three adventures in Rotorua to tucker out the family pooch. They are all close to the city so there's no excuse not to grab the dogs and escape the house for some fresh air!

Kuirau Park | CBD

This sprawling steamy wonderland is perfect for dogs to explore the boardwalks over spluttering vents. And so close to town. So grab a coffee and head along to this family-friendly adventure. In winter and cooler weather the boardwalks are smothered by steam – loads of fun!

Time: Allow 30 to 60 min for a casual explore.
Location: This park is easily accessible from all sides but if you drive north on Kuirau Street you’ll see where all the action is happening.
Accessibility:  Well graded dirt and grassed paths suitable for buggies and bikes.
Note: Dogs are not allowed on the southern part of the park.

Puarenga Track | Waipa State Mill Road

This walk weaves across rustic wooden bridges over crystal clear spring waters. Take a stroll under the punga trees with the pooch beside the small stream. This adventure is perfect for kids too so bring a picnic and perch yourself on a bench seat along the way.

Time: Allow 60 min for an out and back.
Location:  Park at the end of Eight Mile Road – easily found if you drive down Waipa State Mill Road.
Accessibility:  The first part of the walk is suitable for buggies – which is where all the highlights are. It is also a mountain bike track.

Redwood Memorial Grove | Whakarewarewa Forest

Meander through a dramatic stand of towering Californian Redwoods then peer into emerald coloured old thermal pools. This track begins to the right of the i-SITE. Look out for the red arrows on the posts.

Time: Allow 30 min for the 2 km loop.
Location: Long Mile Road
Accessibility: Suitable for buggies. No bikes allowed.
