Take a dip! Family-friendly hot springs
Despite it's name not conquering up the most fragrant of settings, Kerosene Creek has been a highlight of our hot spring adventures. Where else can you wallow away a couple hours in the middle of the forest? Here are our three favourite spots to take a toasty dip.
Kerosene Creek | SH5 towards Taupo
Dip your toes in this geothermal hot spot or take the plunge and let the cascading waterfall massage your neck. These restorative thermal waters are very soothing! This is a popular spot though. The earlier you can arrive, the less crowded it generally is. From the car park follow the dirt path until you reach the main flat area, where you can stash your bags and jump in.
Time: Allow 30 min return to dip your toes. More for bathing.
Accessibility: The dirt path is only suitable for walking. It can get muddy in winter. No dogs.
Butcher's Pool | SH5 towards Taupo
Settle in for a soak at this mineral pool set among lush green farmland. And, you'll probably be joined by some curious cows peering over the fence. The pool was named after one of the area's first settlers and has now been gifted to the people of Reporoa. The non-smelling mineral water is piped from a nearby spring so it's always topped up with fresh water.
Time: Up to you!
Accessibility: The car park is right beside the pool.
Otumuheke Stream | Taupo
When the thermal waters of this stream collide with the chilly Waikato River it makes a picturesque spot to soak weary adventurers. Park at Spa Thermal Park and follow the concrete path north - well sign posted - down to the river. There are toilets and changing rooms near the stream.
Time: Allow 10 min to walk to the stream.
Accessibility: It’s buggy friendly to the stream.
